FW19 Trends From The Big Apple

Style  /   /  By Vicky Lee

The week of the fashion season stars off in a very rainy New York City. This always bustling city gets awash with models and fashionistas alike as we embark on what the designers have been working on for us. I’m always so thrilled to set my eyes upon the shows and excited when I can start to see trends emerging. This really is the city that never sleeps and it’s an absolute buzz to be running about town catching all these fabulous shows.

Key Prints

Along with all types of animal prints, especially leopard, I saw lots of dark floral and colourful prints. Longchamp, Tom Ford and Calvin Klein all presented collections featuring dark floral prints. I think this a welcome change to the ditsy floral prints from last year. It gives a fun and fresh update to the classic spring/summer dress to two piece. Mini dresses in playful colour ways were seen paired with everything for barely-there heels, chunky sneakers and over the knee boots. This is really a look that will see you through the whole year.

Dark Denim

I love my light wash boyfriend jeans for the warmer months, although after seeing the trends from New York Fashion Week Ill be popping them back in the closet for now. It’s all about dark denim this year. We saw sleek Texas tuxedo suits in this shade at Alexander McQueen, while Tom Ford favoured dark denim cropped jeans and blazers. There’s something extremely elegant about this utility focused material. I imagine it teamed with a crisp white shirt for a smart look. While a pretty broderie anglaise blouse for a feminine twist.

Super Romance

The asymmetric neckline has been simmering for a while but took centre stage this week in New York. I expect to be seeing a lot more one shoulder dresses and tops coming through, as well as asymmetric hemlines. Pristine whites played a big part too, with a massive nod to romanticism. Tiers, ruffles, bows and feminine details gave a whimsical feel to the shows. I’m loving the prettiness of this trend, making me think of those blossom filled fresh spring days ahead of us!

Essentially Accessorised

I absolutely love the way a new accessory can so easily update your whole wardrobe. On the runways in New York there was lots of fun new accessories making their debut. We saw headscarves, worn in various different ways. Making the biggest waves amongst the fashion set were the new age of sunglasses. Micro shades have been seen on the likes of Gigi and Bella Hadid on and off the runway. So expect to wearing these new style sunglasses all year. It’ll give your look a funky new edge.
