berry breakfast for glowy skin

Nutritionists around the world agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not only does it enhance our metabolism and give us the energy we need to get through the day, it plays a big part in our skin’s health. A nourishing, beauty-boosting breakfast can keep skin blemish-free and younger-looking, which is why I often like to start the day with a big bowl of berries and yogurt.

I eat a variety of berries throughout the week, and it’s because they’re delicious but also have great benefits for the skin. All types of berries are extremely rich in fibers and antioxidants. Fibers are essential for keeping our digestive systems healthy. They rid us of all the toxins in our bodies that would otherwise help cause blemishes and diseases, while antioxidants fight both free radicals and inflammations that cause premature aging.

The most beneficial of all berries, though, are blueberries, which have been ranked number one in antioxidant activity by the US Department of Agriculture, followed by strawberries and raspberries. These three types of berries owe their bright colors to anthocyanins, a group of antioxidants that protect against cell damage caused by UV light, promote wound healing, and reduce inflammations of the skin.

Strawberries and raspberries are also a rich source of vitamin C – a nutrient that increases the production of collagen, which is essential to skin firmness and elasticity. Vitamin C also has a brightening effect that offers the skin a radiant and glowing appearance.

To make for an even more powerful beauty-boosting breakfast, I like to eat berries with a big dollop of Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is a superfood that does wonders for the skin because it is packed with probiotics – microorganisms like bacteria and yeast – that keep the flora in our intestine balanced and our digestive systems healthy.

If you’re pressed for time in the morning, just turn this breakfast into a quick berry smoothie to take with you on the go. For mine, I like to blend strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries with greek yogurt and a few drops of honey, another food that is rich in antioxidants and that helps keep skin clear and firm. It’s absolutely delicious – I can’t think of a quicker and more nutritious breakfast to start my day!
