In today’s fast-paced world, we are all extremely busy juggling the demands of a full-time career with the needs of our personal lives. There are always deadlines to meet, errands to run, children to take care of and social events to attend both for work and pleasure. Carving out some much-needed “me time” every week seems like a mission impossible, if not a completely futile endeavour.
However, taking at least an hour a week to nurture yourself is the best thing you can do both for your health and the well-being of your family. The truth of the matter is that running yourself to the ground to cater to the needs of everyone around you only leads to feelings of resentment, stress and, eventually, burnout. In this state of physical, emotional and spiritual depletion, you become utterly incapable of caring for your loved ones.
Therefore, far from being a selfish luxury, “me time” is an absolute necessity that helps you unwind, rest and recharge your batteries, allowing you to face the pressing demands of daily life with the necessary dedication and resilience. Not only you will feel much happier and relaxed, but you will also become a positive role model for the people around you by showing them that you respect and value yourself as a person.
The best part, in my opinion, is that in your “me time” you can focus on any activity that brings you pleasure and joy. It could be having a relaxing bubble bath, reading a good book, taking a stroll in the park or doing yoga. As for me, I like to take twenty minutes of “me time” every night to pamper my skin. There is something incredibly soothing in taking off my makeup, reading a gossipy magazine with a sheet mask on and applying all my lotions and potions for the night.
If you’re struggling to fit even an hour a week of “me time” into your busy schedule, I highly recommend you put it in your diary immediately. I find that unless you plan it the same way you would a doctor’s appointment, “me-time” is the first task that falls off your to-do list. Once it is safely pencilled in, “me time” simply becomes another part of your life – one you will immensely look forward to every week.
