My Top 9 Trends From Milan Fashion Week

Style  /   /  By Vicky Lee

Let’s face it. Milan is always a good idea. This Italian city is recognised internationally as one of the worlds most important fashion capitals. I always look forward to Milan fashion and this year it showed off in true Italian style! At the heart of Italian style and design we saw designers  championing diversity. They showcased their classic Italian styles on models of all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life. I thoroughly enjoyed my week spent in Milan, not only the fashion but the wonderful food too! Here are some of my most favourite trends that will be making an appearance next season.

1. Dreamy dresses

We’ve seen plenty of pastel shades this season and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere. There were beautiful dreamy dresses in all kinds of pretty pastel shades on the catwalks at Giorgio Armani. I think it’s great to have an ultra feminine dress that can be worn with heels or given a funky edge if you teamed it with some trainers. Pastel shades are very complementary to all skin tones. I think you’ll be reaching for a dreamy dress in a peachy pink or Parma violet again and again.

2. Futuristic fashion with Super Silver

Silver took a special place on the catwalks this season. It’s usual awash with golds but its was the turn for silver to take centre stage. I love the futuristic vibe that silver garments create. Whether it be silver coated jeans, dresses or coats this is definitely going to be the metallic hue of the season. Go forth and conquer in your silver attire!

3. Creams & Caramels

The seventies vibe was still going strong in Milan and with this the colour palette of brown, beiges and creams. I love the warm of these shades, which will compliment any skin tone. We saw lots of caramel tones at the Tod’s show. With lots of butter soft nappy leather in creamy coffee shades at Bottega Veneta. Don’t be afraid to go head to toe in these delicious colours. If that seems too much for you simply add a statement jacket in a light shade to an all-black outfit and it’ll pop!

4. Look into my Crystal ball

The Italian designers showcased different types of sparkling fabrics this year. This models at Gucci wore silver mesh bodysuits. We also saw heavily embellished crystal gowns. The clear trend is that embellishment of any sort is going to be everywhere. I actually think this is an extremely flattering look as the weight of the fabrics let the dresses hang beautifully over your body.

5. The most useful of belts

The Max Mara collection delivered its usual elegant and timeless pieces. However the utility belt made an appearance modelled effortlessly by Bella Hadid. I love when designers give us something new and unexpected. The great thing is that they go with any outfit. Cinch in your waist with the guilt belt over a maxi dress or oversized tee and shorts. Not only useful for carrying your phone but bang on trend!

6. Feeling powerful in the Power Suit

Putting on a suit gives your an instant confidence boost. You feel ready to take on the world. Bigger isn’t always better this season for the suit. There was a distinct change at the shows which saw a much more simple and slimmer silhouette. Models were seen in brocade suits with crisp white shirts. A lot of the suits were teamed with flat brogues or a plain white pump. I think investing a a well fitted suit could see you off to any occasion. Super smart and business ready with some killer heels, then Sunday lunch with the fam with Balenciaga trainers.

7. Go bold or go home in Neons

Another of the retro trends that is influencing the designers is neon. These fantastically bold colours promise to brighten up anyone’s day! We saw design houses like Bluemarine dabble with a little neon here and there. While House of Holland served up a huge dose of neon brights! With tracksuits, minidresses and accessories all in eye watering shades. At Versace we saw elegant evening wear in fluorescent yellows proving that this trend is a staple this season.

8. Modern day Cowgirl chic

We saw lots of cowgirl influences at London Fashion Week and it continued on the catwalks of Milan. I love this fun trend! Think lots of fringing – on jackets, bags and even trousers. Of course the staple part of the cowgirl look is the cowboy boot! Expect to see these boots making a big impression this season.

Monochromatic looks we’re very popular with designers this season. In fact head to toe outfits in any colour. Black has always been the most flattering and chicest of shades. I love the contrast of black and white. With white boots having a fashion moment right now they make the perfect addition to a black ensemble. Super easy to do bit with big results!

9. IT bags & platform heels

Accessories for next season are looking to the old classics for inspiration. Over the years there’s always those coveted ‘IT’ from various different designers. Expect to see revamped versions on these while still maintaining their original style. Boxy shaped bags were very popular on the catwalks in every colour.

There was a welcome return of the Miu Miu platform heel. So expect to see an influx of platform heels everywhere. I love this style as they give the height without comprising on the comfort!
