why it's better to exercise in the evening

We all know that exercise is key to beautiful skin and a healthy mind, which is why I try to fit some time for the gym or a run in my busy schedule every day. A good work out session never fails to energize me, clear my mind from doubts and worries, and keep my skin well-oxygenated and younger-looking.

But, what many people don’t know is that the time of day you choose to exercise is crucial to the effectiveness of your workout, with the evening being the best absolute time to hit the gym or put your running shoes on.

Far from being simply a matter of personal preference, there is plenty of scientific evidence showing that, all things being equal, those who exercise in the evening are likely to reach a higher level of fitness than those who exercise in the morning. Here’s why:

1. Exercising In The Evening Helps Your Metabolism

Scientists at the Clinical Research Center of the University of Chicago asked 40 healthy men to exercise at different times of the day. The results showed that, in those who exercised in the evening, the levels of the hormones cortisol and thyrotropin, which stimulate the metabolism, increased, while the levels of glucose decreased. These findings suggest that, for optimum results, it is better to work out in the evening.

2. In The Evening, Your Body Is Already Fuelled And Warmed Up

In the morning, people often tend to exercise on an empty stomach, whereas in the evening, their body is already energized by a healthy lunch and nutritious afternoon snacks, giving it all the energy it needs for an intense workout session.

Joint and muscles are also 20% more flexible in the evening from being up and about all day, which lowers the risk of serious injuries.

3. In The Evening, Our Lungs Function Better

Good respiration is key to a successful workout session, and science suggests that our lungs function better in the evening. This is because, as researchers at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center have discovered, our overall airway resistance is at its lowest point during this time of the day.

4. Exercising In The Evening Helps You Sleep Better

Exercise isn’t good just for the body, but it is very beneficial for the mind, too. Exercise is a well-known way to decrease the anxiety, stress, and worries we may feel throughout the day, clearing our mind for a peaceful and restful night of sleep.

5. The Gym Is Less Crowded In The Evening

Although most people are more free in the evening, because they have finished all the work of the day, not many choose to hit the gym at this time. As a result, you’ll be able to use all the equipment you need for as long as you need to, instead of cutting your workout short to make place for the next gym goer – it’s just another way to make your workout more intense and efficient!
