I can hardly imagine a more relaxing way to unwind at the end of a long and tiring day than a warm bubble bath. But for Korean women, a pampering bath is also the perfect occasion to exfoliate the body. While in the West, exfoliation is a practice reserved only for the face, Korean women understand how important it is to extend it to the rest of the body to achieve softer, smoother, and brighter skin all over.

This is why body scrubs are such an important part of Korean culture, they’re performed in jimjilbangs, Korean bathhouses where, once a week, spa-goers congregate for pampering beauty treatments. Korean body scrubs are much more effective than Western-style salt and apricot scrubs because they slowly performed with ttamirri, special brightly-coloured mitts with a sandpaper-like texture that doesn’t irritate the skin.

Before these mitts can perform their magic, though, it is essential to soften up the skin to prepare it for this exfoliating treatment. This is easily achieved by soaking the body in warm water for at least ten to fifteen minutes. Then, you place your hand inside the ttamirri and gently rub it all over your body, including those hard-to-reach and often neglected areas such as the armpits, the inside of your thighs and the backs of your knees.

As you proceed, you’ll notice thin, grey rolls of dead skin coming off your skin, which is very rewarding and satisfying. You’re supposed to pass over the same area two or three times until no more skin comes off, which can take quite a bit of time if you’ve never performed this treatment before. Finally, splash your body with lukewarm water to rinse away all the grey rolls that are still hanging onto your body.

At the end of this simple treatment, your skin is completely transformed: whereas before it is used to be dull and rough to the touch, it is literally as soft as a baby’s and has taken on a beautiful dewy glow. Now that your skin is quickly clean, all the skincare products you apply next will be able to go deeper into the dermis, which enhances their effectiveness.

At the end of the day, the key to achieving flawless and glowy skin of your body is very simple: treat the skin of your body the same way you treat the skin on your face and you will reap the same rewards. That includes exfoliating your body as often as you exfoliate your face and pretty soon you’ll have a body you’ll be proud to show off in bikinis and mini-skirts!
