Alexander McQueen is a designer that every fashionable woman knows about thanks to his radical designs that embodied a darker take on Romanticism. McQueen wanted people to fear the women he dressed, so he infused harsh and daring elements into each of his creations to make women feel strong and powerful. This dark, even menacing, vision has mellowed in recent years into a softer, more elegant aesthetic that accentuates a woman’s subtler strengths and femininity, and has gained the brand a whole new audience in the process. His design house even made the elegant and angelic dress that Kate Middleton wore for the Royal Wedding!
I really love the new direction that the brand has taken, and am really impressed with the new 2016 Resort collection in particular. The collection was inspired by a blooming garden in springtime, and each piece radiates a sophisticated feminine energy. My favorite of the collection is this off the shoulders, powder blue mini dress I recently bought. The soft shade of blue reminds me of a summer sky, and the scalloped edges and frills add a flirtatious touch to this otherwise sexy, figure-hugging piece.
Light and airy, it’s the perfect garment for both smart casual and formal spring occasions. I like to dress it down with a casual pair of ballet flats and a big tote bag for a lunch date with my girlfriends, or dress it up with a pair of killer heels, a small leather clutch and vampy red lips for a night out on the town. Still, my favorite way to wear it is with a simple pair of black pumps and natural makeup, to really show off the beautiful design of the dress – a statement piece itself. It’s an understated and chic ensemble suitable even for the most luxurious of settings and occasions, like here where I went for high tea at the Savoy Hotel in London!
